Mills Z Shallow lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel and attacks the deep middle with a classic Mills concept paired with an underneath crosser. The backside outside receiver runs a deep post while the inside slot receiver clears out on a corner route, creating the Mills combo that stretches the deep half defender vertically then horizontally. Underneath, the TE runs a shallow drag across the field from the strong side while the HB releases on a check release flat route to the strong side, giving the quarterback a built in checkdown against pressure. This is a man and Cover 4 beater with the primary read starting on the post to corner combo to see if the safety bites, then working down to the shallow crosser if the deep shell is sound.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap check safety alignment, if both safeties are shaded to one side or showing two high with tight splits the post route has a better chance to split them. Post snap key the deep safety responsible for the post, if he bails hard to cover it the corner route behind him should come open for a big gain. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle or weak side linebacker sinks with the shallow drag instead of stepping up on the run fake, look immediately to the HB flat as the quicker underneath option. This concept struggles against a true Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 with disciplined safeties who stay square and do not bite on the corner route, since that leaves both deep routes covered and forces you to live on the shallow crosser all game. Beware user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow crosser lane, if the user jumps the drag route be ready to climb the progression back to the post or reset to the flat route for a checkdown.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high look, since Mills only works if you can get the post to threaten one safety while the corner route occupies the other defender in that half.

If the corner shows man coverage press at the line, hot route the shallow drag to a slant or speed out to beat the leverage instantly instead of waiting on the developing crosser.

Against zone shells with linebackers sitting shallow, use the HB flat route as your first read since it settles underneath the corner route and exploits the natural void created by the post pulling the safety deep.

Call this on second and medium to third and short so the shallow drag has room to work and the defense cannot sell out on the deep shot without giving up an easy underneath completion.

Pair this with Cross Dig or Digs H Option earlier in a series so the defense respects the post shot, then come back to Mills Z Shallow to hit the shallow crosser once linebackers start cheating up on quick game.
