Breakdown
In N Up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot lines up two receivers to the boundary side, one running an in route from the slot that settles across the middle while the outside receiver clears vertically and breaks back to a comeback at the sag point, forming a natural high-low read on that side. To the field side, the slot receiver runs a quick out breaking away from the formation while the outside receiver pushes vertically up the numbers on a go route, stacking a two-level stretch that attacks cornerbacks playing off coverage. The RB stays in to check block off the blue route shown in the backfield, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to read the in route first, then work to the corner route or the field side out depending on leverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells the user defender to expect the in route sitting in the intermediate hole between zone landmarks. If the cornerback on the boundary side is playing off at seven or more yards, the corner route stacked on top of the in route should be open once the in route pulls the flat or hook defender. A single high safety pre-snap often means Cover 3 or Cover 1, so key the middle linebacker's depth at the snap since a shallow drop from him signals he is spying the in route and taking away the primary read. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone are the biggest threat to this concept, so if you see a defender sinking hard underneath at the snap, work the field side out route instead of forcing the in route. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge with no spy can be countered by the quick in route timing, but delayed corner blitzes off the boundary side can undercut the corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hot route check to identify if the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety shells before the snap, since this concept thrives against zone coverage that has to pass off the in route.
Progression read starts with the shallow in cutting across the field, then works to the corner breaking route on the same side if a linebacker sinks into the throwing lane, then finally to the field side out route as a checkdown against zone drops.
This play punishes off man coverage because the in route creates natural separation against trail technique, so if you see press man across the board consider audibling to a quicker hitch or slant concept instead.
Best called on second and medium or third and short to medium distances where the sticks align with the depth of the in route and out route breakpoints.
