Breakdown

In N Up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot is a five man protection pass concept built around a deep in route and a vertical clear out. The outside receiver to the left runs a deep dig that crosses the field flat before breaking back across the middle, while the inline receiver on that side runs a corner post into the flat as an underneath check. On the right side the TE or slot runs a vertical seam up the numbers while the outside X runs a quick out at the sticks, and the RB or extra blocker checks the middle for pressure before releasing on a vertical from the backfield. This is a man beater at its core, using the deep in to break away from trail technique and the vertical up route to stress a single high safety, with the primary read progression starting at the vertical seam on the right, working down to the deep in crossing from the left, and checking off to the flat and out routes underneath.

Defensive Reads

Read the free safety before the snap, if he is aligned deep middle in a single high shell the vertical seam route is going to pull him and open the window for the deep in. Watch the cornerback technique on the seam side, soft coverage or a bail technique tells you the seam will be contested, so shift your primary focus to the deep in breaking route instead. Key the linebacker depth underneath, if they sink hard into the deep in throwing lane on zone drops, be ready to check down to the flat or out route rather than forcing the crosser. This play struggles against Cover 3 with disciplined zone drops because the deep in has to thread multiple underneath zones, so have a hot route ready to turn the flat runner into a quicker breaking route. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field baiting the deep in throw, if you see a defender lurking in that throwing lane, look to the vertical seam or the flat route as your bailout options instead.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium to long when you need to attack a single high safety look because the vertical seam and deep in combo stretches the defense both horizontally and vertically.

Pre snap, identify whether the safety is rotating to the seam side, if he is, work your eyes immediately to the deep in coming across the field for a big chunk gain.

Hot route the flat runner on the corner post side into a quick speed out if you diagnose zone coverage, this gives you an instant answer against Cover 3 sink drops.

Pair this play with Curls or Digs H Option in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the deep in breakers and the shorter combination routes, keeping linebackers honest.

Against man coverage, trust the deep in route to separate from trail defenders on the break, especially versus Cover 1 or Cover 0 where there is no safety help underneath.

If you see a nano blitz or overload pressure look, get the ball out quickly to the flat route or check down to the vertical release from the backfield rather than holding for the deep in.
