RPO Peek Slant lines up out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel, giving the QB a run/pass mesh point read on the read defender aligned over the box. The outside WR runs a corner-breaking route up to a deep in, the inside slot runs a quick out that turns upfield, and the backside receiver runs a slant into the vacated middle of the field, while the offensive line executes the zone run blocking scheme up front. The primary read progression starts pre-snap with the box count and read defender, then post-snap the QB peeks the slant window first before working to the give read on the run action underneath.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alignment of the read defender pre-snap, if he is walked up in the box he is the run key for the QB to peek. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high often means the slant window stays tight so the run becomes the better outcome. Post-snap, key the linebacker flow, if they crash hard downhill on the run fake the slant lane opens immediately behind them. User the underneath zone defender or lurking linebacker to sit on the slant and take away the QB's first peek read, forcing him into the run. Cover 3 with an aggressive Sam or Mike linebacker shuts this down if that defender stays disciplined and does not bite on the run action, since it clogs both the give lane and the slant throwing window.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap, if the count favors the run pull the ball down immediately without hesitation on the mesh point.
Use the peek read to bait linebackers into crashing on the run fake, then rip the slant into the void they vacate.
Against man coverage, hot route the outside corner route into a hitch or fade if your WR has a clear size or speed mismatch on the corner.
Against zone shells with a sunk safety, trust the run read since the extra defender in coverage means a light box behind the line.
Pair this play with Quick Slants or Double Slant earlier in a series so the defense keys slant motion, then come back to RPO Peek Slant to punish overaggressive linebacker run fits.
