Breakdown

PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace with 12 personnel that sells inside zone action before the QB waggles to the boundary. The backside TE runs a deep corner route stretching the top of the field, the play side TE releases on a shallow drag underneath, the outside WR runs a deep post that clears the middle of the field, and the flat route from the backfield or attached TE gives the QB a quick outlet on the waggle. The primary read progression starts with the flat route as the checkdown, works to the underneath drag against zone drops, then attacks the deep corner as the boot develops and defenders bite on the run fake, making this an effective play-action man and zone beater depending on leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expecting run they will bite hard on the play fake and open up the drag and corner routes behind them. Check safety alignment, a single high safety in Cover 3 or Cover 1 struggles to get width fast enough to cover the deep corner route once the QB commits to the boot side. Key on the flat defender post snap, if a linebacker or corner sinks too deep in zone coverage the underneath drag and flat route will be wide open in the space they vacate. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the QB waggle since a disciplined edge player or linebacker can contain the rollout and force a throwaway or sack. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep safeties can take away the corner route, so be ready to check down to the flat or drag rather than forcing the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are geared up to stop the run and linebackers are sitting in run fits. Look for single high safety shells or Cover 3 pre-snap since the run fake holds linebackers and the corner route can split the deep third defender. Hot route the flat man into a quick out if you see aggressive edge blitzers crashing the waggle side, this gives the QB an immediate answer against nano blitzes. Pair this play with 26 Duo or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on the run action, then call PA Ctr Waggle to cash in on the same look. On third and long, be cautious since the deep drop and rollout mechanics take time to develop and can get the QB hit if the protection breaks down.
