PA Boot Left is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that pulls the QB left on a boot fake off the run action. The route concept shows a deep corner/go route from the backside X breaking outside up top, a deep crosser from the far TE working from right to left across the field, an intermediate out route from the inline TE, and a flat route from the RB releasing left as the checkdown. Blocking up front holds the pocket while the QB rolls, and the primary read progression is the flat route first for the quick throw underneath, then the TE out route settling in the intermediate zone, working up to the deep crosser as the shot play against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Check for two deep safeties pre-snap since Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells will have help over the top on the deep crosser and go route, forcing you to live underneath with the flat and TE out. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because if they bite hard on the run fake, the flat route and TE out will be wide open in the vacated underneath zones. Identify man coverage by looking for corners in press or tight bump alignment on the X receiver, which signals the deep crosser and go route combo can win against trailing defenders. Beware of a user-controlled defender spying the boot or crashing the edge, since a disciplined defensive end or outside linebacker who stays home can blow up the rollout protection and force a bad throw. Zone blitzes and Cover 3 buzz looks with a safety rotating down are the biggest threats since they clog the flat and shorten the QB's window before the deep routes develop.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are keying run to sell the fake and get the rollout working. Check the flat defender pre-snap because if the corner or slot defender is sitting in the flat, hot route the RB into a flat and up or quick out to clear space for the deep crosser. Against man coverage, the deep crosser is your money throw since it beats trailing linebackers and slower corners in coverage. Against zone, work the TE out route into the void created by the boot action pulling underneath defenders toward the run fake. Pair this with HB Stretch or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to sell run tendencies, then call PA Boot Left when the defense starts flowing hard to stop the ground game. Use play-action rollout awareness by rolling out of the pocket manually if the AI blocking breaks down, since the boot naturally buys extra time against edge pressure.
