HB Zone Wk Alert Z Smoke is an inside zone run out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel with a built-in bubble alert to the Z receiver. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking zone left with the fullback or TE arc pulling weak, the HB taking a weak side zone track, and the Z receiver running a quick smoke screen to the flat as an audible outlet. This is a run play with a screen alert attached rather than a play-action or dropback concept, so the primary read is pre-snap: identify the alert to Z if the corner is off or the flat is soft, otherwise hand off and read the zone blocking track weak side.
Watch the play side corner alignment before the snap, soft or off coverage on the Z receiver signals the smoke alert is coming and you should sit on that route with a user defender. Key the linebacker flow to the weak side, if linebackers are slow to diagnose zone run action the cutback lane opens quickly for the HB. Man coverage with the corner pressed on Z takes away the smoke alert entirely, forcing the offense into the standard zone run design. Blitzing off the weak side edge can beat this play before the zone blocking scheme sets, especially with a nano blitz or contain rush that stays disciplined instead of crashing hard inside. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with underneath zone defenders sitting flat can jump the smoke route, so sinking a linebacker or nickel defender into that throwing lane discourages the quick screen and forces the run.
Check the cornerback depth on the Z receiver before the snap, if he is playing off coverage or bailing into a deep zone throw the smoke alert immediately for a free five to seven yards.
If the corner is playing tight press or squatting at the line, stay with the run and trust the weak side zone blocking to develop the cutback lane.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest between the run threat and the quick screen outlet.
Pair this call with HB Stretch Alert X Smoke and HB Zone Wk in your play sequencing so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies, since all three share the same pre-snap look but attack different edges.
Against defenses that crash safeties into the box to stop the run, lean on the Z smoke alert to punish the light perimeter numbers.
