PA Roll Rt is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that pulls the QB to the right edge behind flow fake. The backside X runs a deep dig that breaks in at intermediate depth, the inline TE releases into an out route sitting just past the sticks, the near TE runs a corner route off a vertical stem outside, and the halfback checks down on a flat route into the flat vacated by the rollout. The primary read progresses from the corner route as the shot play if the safety bites on the run fake, down to the out route for the sit read against zone, then to the HB flat as the checkdown when the pocket collapses on the edge.
Defensive Reads
Watch for Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud, since the flat defender rolling down can undercut the HB flat route and the corner route becomes the answer. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner route and the deep dig crossing behind linebackers. Blitz heavy calls with edge pressure to the rollout side kill the timing fast, so the checkdown to the HB becomes mandatory and should be your first read against six man rushes. Zone drops from linebackers sitting on the out route signal a sink and rob scheme, in which case work the deep dig against the vacated intermediate window. Cover 2 with the corner sinking hard on the outside route takes away the shot play, forcing the quarterback to work the out and flat combo underneath.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs when the defense shows heavy run support or stacked box looks to sell the play fake and freeze linebackers.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, single high shells open up the corner route as a shot play while two high shells push you toward the out and flat combo.
Use the rollout to buy time against edge pressure, the QB can throw on the run to the flat or out route without resetting his feet.
Pair this with HB Stretch or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the run fake actually holds linebackers and opens the deep dig.
Hot route the HB flat into a block if you expect a wide edge blitz, since the rollout mechanic already gives you a built in escape angle.
