Breakdown

PA Roll Rt is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that pulls the QB to the right edge on fake HB action. The backside X runs a deep dig that sits down in the middle void, the TE from the backside releases on a deep post, the slot TE runs a shallow drag underneath, and the outside WR to the roll side runs a corner route off the run fake that becomes the primary read as the QB works to the flat. This is a play-action man and zone beater that stresses flow-fitting linebackers and forces the roll-side corner and safety to declare on the corner route while the QB has an easy checkdown to the drag if everything is covered.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, a two high shell that rotates down to the roll side flat is the biggest threat to shut down the corner route. Watch for edge pressure from the backside defensive end crashing the roll side, a fast contain rush can force the QB to throw off platform or eat the sack before routes develop. If linebackers bite hard on the run fake and vacate the middle of the field, the backside dig route becomes wide open, especially against man coverage teams that blitz linebackers. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow drag lane will bait the QB into an easy checkdown interception, so read the user's positioning before committing to the drag as a safety valve. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender rolling to the boundary can squeeze both the corner route and the drag, forcing the QB to hold the ball and take the sack unless the dig comes open late.

Usage Tips

Look at the roll side cornerback and safety pre-snap, if you see man coverage or a single high shell the corner route to the boundary will win most of the time once the QB gets to the top of his roll.

Use the shallow drag as your first checkdown against zone shells with underneath linebackers sitting on the flat, it is an easy conversion on third and short.

Sell the run fake by holding the ball on the fake handoff animation as long as possible to freeze linebackers before sprinting out, this widens the passing lanes for the dig and corner routes.

Pair this play with HB Pump Draw and PA Boot Roll from the same Ace set so defenders cannot key on run fake tempo or roll direction, keeping linebackers honest.

Best called on second and medium or first down to keep defenses guessing, avoid using it in obvious dropback passing situations where the roll fake loses its run threat.
