Inside Cross is a route combination play run out of Singleback Ace with 12 personnel (1 RB, 2 TE) on the field. Off the snap, both outside receivers break inward on deep crossing patterns underneath a vertical stem from the left X receiver, while the two inside slot targets run mirrored outs breaking away from the ball toward each sideline, and the running back checks release into a shallow route behind the line. This is primarily a man beater, using the natural rub and crossing traffic underneath to create separation against man coverage, with the deep crosser from the right slot and the vertical stem from the outside X forming the primary read progression: work the deep crosser first, then come back to the shallow drag or the checkdown to the back if the crossers are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are pressed on the outside receivers or playing off, since press man coverage gets beaten badly by the rub created from the crossing routes underneath. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if the middle linebacker sits shallow and flows hard to the crossers, that is your cue the defense is playing man and the deep crosser will win against trailing coverage. Key the safety rotation post-snap, since a single high safety rotating over the top signals man coverage underneath, while two safeties staying deep signals zone drops that will clog the crossing routes. If you see a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane or lurking in the middle of the field, that is a sign the defense is baiting the deep crosser, so check down to the running back or the opposite out route instead. This play struggles against a hard inside blitz with man coverage on the outside, since the quarterback will not have time to let the deep crosser develop, so recognize A gap pressure pre-snap and be ready to throw quickly or check to a shorter option.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium to third and long when you expect man coverage, since the crossing routes create natural picks against man defenders trailing in coverage.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, hot route the vertical stem on the X to a comeback or hitch to shorten the throw and beat off man leverage without needing to drive the ball 20 plus yards downfield.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, look to the shallow drag and the running back check release first since the crossers will run into zone traffic rather than beating man defenders.

Pair this play with Y Shallow Cross or TE Cross in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect crossing traffic on every snap, which sets up user controlled defenders to bite on the wrong route and opens throwing lanes for the deep crosser.

Against man match schemes, motion is not needed since the natural stem and cross create enough separation, but be ready to hot route the running back to a flat route if the defense brings a blitz off the edge and you need a quick outlet.
