Inside Cross out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel is a man beater built around a deep crossing route from the backside TE that sits in the diagram as the red route breaking upfield after a shallow release. The two yellow routes on the strong side create a dig and drag combo that clears out underneath zone defenders while the shallow crosser occupies the middle linebacker, and the blue route from the backfield gives the QB a checkdown outlet on the opposite hash. Blocking is a standard 5-man protection with the RB releasing late, so the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser against man coverage, works to the intermediate dig on the strong side if the crosser is taken away, and finishes with the checkdown to the backfield route against pressure.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners playing tight technique since the deep crosser is designed to beat man matchups by working across the field away from trailing defenders. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow and jumps the underneath drag route he opens up the deep crosser behind him. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field acting as a lurk threat, this is the primary counter to the deep crosser and will bait quarterbacks into a costly turnover. Zone coverage with two deep safeties and sunk linebackers will squeeze the passing lanes for both the crosser and the dig route, forcing the quarterback down to the checkdown. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or up the middle exploit the five man protection quickly, so watch for pre-snap overload fronts that signal pressure is coming before the routes can develop.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium or third and long when you need a route that stresses man coverage across the middle of the field. Pre-snap, check for single high safety looks or man coverage indicators like corners lined up tight on the outside receivers since the deep crosser thrives against man defenders who have to trail across the field. If you see two deep safeties and zone drops underneath, hot route the crosser into a shorter option or work the dig route instead since the crosser will run into extra defenders. Pair this play in your call sheet with TE Cross or Y Shallow Cross from the same formation to keep the defense guessing on which receiver is running the deep crosser. Against aggressive blitz looks, get the ball out quickly to the backfield route since the protection is built for a standard five man scheme and cannot hold up long against six man pressure.
