PA Boot Roll is a play-action bootleg out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that pulls the quarterback outside the pocket off a fake handoff, buying extra time against blitz-heavy calls. The route concept typically flushes the QB toward the rollout side with a flat option, an intermediate crosser working from the backside, and a deep shot route stretching the safety over the top. Primary read progression starts with the flat route to hold the underneath defender, then works to the crossing route settling into the void, with the deep shot as the home run check if the safety bites on run action.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety looks pre-snap since that shell is most vulnerable to the play fake freezing the second level defenders. Watch for the strong safety or nickel defender crashing down on the run fake. If he bites hard, the crossing route will have a wide open lane behind him. Post-snap, key the flat defender. If he sits and reads the QB's eyes instead of the fake, expect a user controlled defender to jump the underneath route, so be ready to climb the progression to the deep shot. Cover 3 zone defenses with a hard charging edge rusher can collapse the pocket fast on the boot side, so recognize contain blitzes before the snap and be ready to check down early. Man coverage with a blitz behind it is the toughest matchup for this play since there is no natural picture to hold defenders, so avoid calling this against known Cover 0 or man blitz tendencies.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Single high shells with the safety cheating toward the box are prime targets since the play action freezes the linebackers and opens the crosser.

Use your rollout momentum to your advantage. If the defense shows an outside blitz to the roll side, hot route the flat man to a quick out or hitch to beat the edge pressure immediately.

Pair this call with HB Dive or Inside Zone earlier in the drive so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up PA Boot Roll to capitalize on aggressive linebacker flow.

Alternate this with PA Roll Rt or PA Boot Left later in the game once the defense adjusts, since the mirrored boot action keeps defenders guessing on which side the QB rolls to.
