Double Sluggo lines up in Singleback Ace 12 personnel with both outside receivers running sluggo (slant and go) routes vertically up the numbers to attack deep coverage. The backside TE runs a deep post from a tight alignment while the play side TE releases into a short flat route and the HB checks down into the same flat area as a safety valve. This is a pure man beater built to hit double moves against aggressive corners playing tight coverage, with the primary read progression going X sluggo to Y post to the flat concept underneath if the double moves are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify if the corners are playing man to man with inside or outside leverage since that dictates which sluggo route has the better angle for separation. Watch safety depth and rotation at the snap, a single high safety rolling to help on one sluggo route usually opens the backside post for a big play. Key the flat defender or nickel backer on the play side, if he sinks with the TE flat route it signals zone coverage and the sluggo double move should still work against soft corners. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep, as this coverage can bracket both sluggo routes and force you into the underdeveloped checkdown. Recognize blitz packages through pre-snap linebacker alignment, since Double Sluggo has minimal protection help and a hot blitz off the edge can force a quick, low value throw before the routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage with corners playing up in the receivers face before the snap since the sluggo double move is designed to freeze aggressive defensive backs on the initial slant fake. If you see two high safeties bail into a soft shell, hot route one of the sluggo receivers into a comeback or dig to punish the cushion instead of forcing the deep shot. Use this play on early downs or in two minute situations where you can take a shot down the field without major risk of a three and out. Combine Double Sluggo with quick game concepts like Quick Slants or Double Hitch earlier in a series to condition the defense into playing tight man coverage, then hit them with the double move for the explosive gain. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1, key the underneath flat defender and be ready to check down to the TE flat or HB if the deep windows are late developing.
