Breakdown

HB Stretch Alert X Smoke is an outside zone run out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel with a pre-snap alert tag that converts the X receiver into a bubble smoke screen. The offensive line flows laterally with the stretch blocking scheme while the HB presses the edge and reads his blockers for a cutback lane, and the X receiver runs a quick smoke route with the split end sitting on a vertical release as a decoy. This play is built as an RPO look. Your primary read is pre-snap: if the corner over the X is playing off or the defense shows a heavy box, pull the alert and throw the smoke for an easy conflict-free gain, otherwise hand it off and let the HB read the zone blocking for his cut.

Defensive Reads

Watch the cornerback aligned over the X receiver, off coverage or soft leverage is the trigger for the offense to throw the smoke instead of running. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line on the snap the HB has a bounce lane to the edge. Identify any flat or underneath zone defender who can sink and jump the smoke route, since that defender kills the RPO option entirely. Look for a stacked box with extra defenders inside the tackles, which signals the offense should trust the alert and take the free throw outside. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the HB mesh point, since a disciplined user can shut down both the give and the smoke read simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Check the corner alignment on the X receiver before the snap, if he is playing off coverage or shaded inside, throw the smoke immediately for a free five to seven yards.

If the defense shows a stacked box with the corner playing tight man or aggressive press, stick with the handoff and trust your zone blocking to the play side.

Use this play on early downs in standard personnel to keep the defense honest, since the alert tag punishes defenses that sell out to stop the run.

Pair this with HB Stretch and Mtn Wide Zone in the same set to build a stretch series, then mix in HB Counter or HB Misdirection off the same look once the defense starts crashing the edge.

Avoid calling this into heavy zone shells with a flat defender sitting underneath, since that defender can jump the smoke route before the ball arrives.
