This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and stress undersized fronts, with the primary read being the A gap first and a bounce to either B gap if the middle is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Look for base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers playing at normal depth, this play beats those alignments cleanly. Stacked boxes with 8 defenders in the box or a blitz look pre-snap should signal an audible away from this play, since the dive has no answer for extra numbers inside. Watch for a user-controlled Mike linebacker sitting in the A gap or shooting a gap on the snap, this is the primary threat that kills the play at the mesh point. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with man coverage on the outside leaves the box vulnerable, making this an efficient gap scheme run against those shells. If the defense shows a nano blitz with both DTs crashing inside gaps simultaneously, expect this play to get blown up before the HB reaches the line of scrimmage.

Call this play when you see a 6 man box or lighter, since the dive scheme cannot handle extra defenders stacked inside.

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the Mike linebacker's depth to confirm he is not creeping down to fill the A gap before the snap.
