Fl Corner out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel is a man beater built around the flanker running a corner route to attack the boundary against off coverage or press man. The flanker's corner route is the primary read, especially against a single high safety look, while the tight ends and backside receiver work underneath to hold linebackers and safeties in the intermediate zone, giving the corner route room to break outside. Blocking is a standard 5 man protection with the running back releasing late or staying in to chip, so the quarterback's first look is the corner, then working back to any underneath option if the corner is blanketed.
Defensive Reads
Identify the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety cheating to the passing strength tips off Cover 1 or Cover 3 and opens the window for the corner route. Watch the flanker's cornerback leverage, if he is playing outside shade with no safety help over the top the corner route wins immediately on the break. Read the flow of the underneath linebackers after the snap, if they sink deep into the throwing lane against Cover 3 the quarterback needs to rush the corner throw before the zone closes. Beware Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field, the corner route runs directly into the safety's zone and gets contested or picked off if thrown late. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in a deep half or playing a lurk technique underneath, aggressive user movement toward the sideline is the biggest threat to this route and should force a check to the backside hot route.
Usage Tips
Check the corner's pre-snap alignment before the snap, if he is playing off with outside leverage the corner route has a natural window against Cover 3 or Cover 1 sink drops.
Use this play on second and long or third and medium to long when defenses are more likely to sit in a single high shell rather than roll two deep safeties.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see man coverage across the board, this gives you a fast underneath answer if the corner route gets jumped.
Pair Fl Corner with Z Post Y Out or PA Post Dig earlier in a drive so defenders start respecting the deep middle, then come back to this play to isolate the corner against a defender playing too far inside.
Motion the flanker pre-snap if your playbook allows it to confirm man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know it is man and the corner route becomes a strong shot play call.
