Breakdown

PA DBL Go is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that uses a run fake to hold the second level before releasing two vertical routes into the pattern. Both the X and the TE stacked over the tackle box run straight Go routes up the numbers and the seam, while the HB stays in to chip and run a short check release out of the backfield after selling run action. This is a man beater designed to attack off coverage and single high shells, with the primary read progression going from the boundary Go route to the seam Go route, and the HB check release as the checkdown if both verticals are blanketed downfield.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety or Cover 3 shell tells you this play has a strong shot to win over the top on one of the two Go routes Watch the cornerbacks at the snap, if they open their hips and run with the vertical release you are in man coverage and both Go routes become live reads Key the linebackers after the play fake, if they bite hard on the run action it opens up throwing lanes to the seam Go route before the safety can rotate over Look for a user controlled safety sitting deep in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to both verticals and can jump either route if the quarterback stares it down Identify Cover 2 or two high shells pre-snap as a warning sign, with two deep safeties splitting the field neither Go route has much room to work and the HB check release becomes the safer outlet

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in shot play sequences when you have already established the run game to sell the play fake convincingly

Check the safety shell before the snap, this play hits hardest against single high looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3 where only one deep defender has to cover two verticals

If you see two high safeties pre-snap, be ready to move to the HB check release quickly since the double Go concept will be capped by two deep defenders

Hot route the HB to a flat or swing route if you expect a heavy blitz, this gives you a quick answer against pressure while still holding the play fake threat

Pair this play in your call sheet with HB Dive, HB Stretch, or 26 Duo so the run fake is believable, then call PA DBL Go once the defense starts crashing down on early run tendencies
