Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap, since if he steps up to play run action the flat route will be wide open on the boot side. Key the boot side outside cornerback, if he sinks into a deep zone drop the out route sits down in front of him for an easy completion. Run this on early downs or in second and short situations so the play fake actually influences run blitzers and linebacker depth. Check pre-snap for single high safety looks or heavy box counts, since those alignments confirm the defense is biting on run and opens up the boot side flat and out combo. Hot route the backside dig into a deeper post if you see two high safeties bailing into a zone drop, since that adds a shot play element to the concept.
