The diagram shows the QB (red icon) faking the handoff to the motion man before working out toward the flat behind the offensive line, while a single vertical route is stacked wide as the outlet on the perimeter. This is a boundary-stretching play-action concept designed to punish overaggressive run flow and linebacker fits, with the primary read starting on the rollout flat fake and progressing to the vertical route if the defense bites on run action.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers keying hard on the jet motion pre-snap. Aggressive flow toward the fake indicates a boot fake is live and the defense is vulnerable to the vertical shot. Identify single high shells (Cover 3 or Cover 1) pre-snap since these are the most susceptible to the run fake pulling a flat or curl defender out of position. Post-snap, key the edge defender or outside linebacker responsible for the flat. If they crash the fake instead of staying disciplined, the boot side is wide open for the QB to exploit. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined safeties who do not bite on run action will sit on the vertical route and take away the big play, forcing the QB to check down. User-controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking underneath can jump the boot action if they diagnose the play-action fake quickly, so avoid calling this against defenders who consistently key run action.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion with the jet man to bait linebackers into flowing hard before the snap, then trust the play-action boot to hold the edge defender for a split second longer.

Call this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel packages where defenses are conditioned to respect the Ace jet sweep look from this same set.

Check the flat defender and outside linebacker depth before the snap. If they are crashing hard on run fits, the boot fake will freeze them just long enough to hit the vertical shot.

Pair this with actual Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a series so the defense has real film reps on the run action, making the play-action fake far more effective later in the game.

Roll the QB with user control on the boot to extend the play if the vertical route is blanketed, since this play design gives you time to check down or scramble for positive yardage.
