Breakdown

PA Stretch runs a play-action fake off the outside zone stretch run, holding the linebackers with the run fake before releasing two receivers into the pattern. The backside X runs a deep vertical up the sideline to stress a single high safety, while on the play side one receiver runs a shallow drag underneath and the other releases into a flat/comeback route that sits down just past the line. This is primarily a zone beater that attacks the void created when the front seven steps up to fill run gaps, with the deep vertical as the first read against single high looks and the flat/drag combo as the answer versus zone defenders who sink under the run action.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high safety alignment since that tells you the deep vertical route has one-on-one leverage against the corner. Watch linebacker depth and spacing before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line anticipating run, that confirms the play fake will freeze them and open the flat and drag underneath. Post-snap, key the flow of the second level defenders, if linebackers bite hard on the stretch run fake you have a clean window for the drag route across the middle. Beware of defenses running Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep zone drops, since the single deep route will be covered and the underneath defenders can sit on the flat and drag combo. This concept is vulnerable to a delayed blitz or contain rush that stays home on the play fake, since minimal blockers stay in to protect and pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of the vertical route before it develops.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs, ideally 1st or 2nd and short to medium, when the defense expects run based on personnel and formation tendencies. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see a single high safety or the defense is in a run-fit look with the box loaded, take the shot on the deep vertical route immediately off the play fake. If the defense shows two high safeties or you diagnose zone coverage post-snap, work the flat route first and use the drag as your check down against underneath zone defenders sinking too deep. Pair this play in sequence with HB Stretch and 26 Duo earlier in a series so the outside zone run action sells hard and linebackers start cheating downhill before you dial up PA Stretch to hit the play fake. Motion or shift the TE pre-snap to identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows the shift, since this route concept struggles against disciplined man coverage with no natural pick.
