Flanker Drive out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel shows a five man route concept with two vertical clear outs and a shallow drive combo underneath. The outside receiver runs a go route up the sideline while the inside receiver on that side pushes a deep vertical seam to stretch the defense downfield and clear space underneath. On the other side, the flanker runs a deep drive route crossing the field on a shallow angle while a flat route releases underneath to the sideline, with the running back checking release out of the backfield on an angled route to the flat as a shorter option. This is a man beater built on the drive concept, using the crossing routes to create natural rub separation, with the primary read progression starting on the drive route working across the field, then to the flat route underneath, and finally to the running back as a checkdown if the intermediate routes are covered.
Pre-snap, look for man coverage indicators such as corners pressed on the outside receivers and a linebacker shaded toward the flanker, since this play is designed to exploit man to man matchups with the drive route. Watch for a single high safety shell (Cover 3 or Cover 1) which allows the two vertical routes to occupy the deep defenders and open up the drive and flat combo underneath. Post-snap, identify any user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or spying the middle of the field, since a smart user can jump the drive route and undercut the throw for a pick six. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can bracket the vertical seam route, so be ready to reroute your primary read to the drive or flat combo instead of forcing the ball deep. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if the linebackers drop quickly into hook zones, the drive route may get squeezed, so anticipate throwing the flat route earlier in the progression.
Use this play on second or third and medium when you expect man coverage since the drive route creates natural separation against man defenders trailing across the formation.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties in a shell, hot route the vertical seam runner to a hitch or sit route to avoid throwing into a deep zone defender sitting on the route.
Against off man coverage, let the drive route develop fully before throwing since it needs time to cross the field and separate from trailing defenders.
Pair this play with PA Post Dig or PA Post Cross Shot in the same personnel grouping to keep the defense honest against play action after you have shown them the quick drive concept a few times.
On third and long, use the flat route as a checkdown option or user the running back's flat release manually if the drive route is blanketed by a robber or lurking linebacker.
