HB Stretch out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel is a pure outside zone run play, shown by the offensive line and both TEs flowing laterally with the RB path bending from the mesh point out toward the edge before angling upfield. The blocking scheme is zone based, with linemen reach blocking and climbing to the second level while the backside is cut off to seal pursuit. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since there is no route concept on the diagram, it is a run-blocking scheme designed to outflank the defense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is bounce, bend, or bang based on how the edge defender and force player fit the play.
Watch the defensive end or edge player pre-snap to see if he is set wide in a contain alignment, which signals the defense is prepared to spill the run back inside. Check linebacker depth, if they are stacked tight behind the line expect fast flow and fill, if they are backed off expect a scrape exchange or zone read discipline. Post-snap, identify the force defender, usually the strong safety or outside linebacker, since his leverage determines whether the back should bounce outside or cut back inside. This play struggles against defenses with a user-controlled linebacker flowing hard playside and staying home for cutback lanes, so mix in cutback-heavy runs to punish over-pursuit. Heavy blitz packages with edge pressure can blow up the stretch path before it develops, so recognize overload blitzes pre-snap and consider checking to a quicker hitting run or play-action instead.
Attack light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders in the box, since outside zone loses value against stacked fronts with extra run support.
Use pre-snap motion or a TE shift to identify if the defense is playing spill or contain on the edge before the snap.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Counter Str out of the same formation to keep linebackers honest on flow and misdirection.
Best called on early downs, 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium, to stay ahead of the sticks without tipping pass tendencies.
If facing an aggressive user at defensive end crashing hard down the line, hot route the playside TE to seal or use the bounce read to get outside the crash.
