Breakdown

PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint concept out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that sells the run fake before the quarterback sprints out to attack the flat and intermediate zones on one side of the field. The route combo typically features a flat route from the HB or attached TE combined with deeper routes from the receivers to stretch the defense vertically and horizontally, forcing defenders to choose between the underneath flat threat and the developing routes behind it. This is a zone beater at its core, since the sprint out puts the quarterback on the move and lets him read flat defenders and hook zone players from outside in, with the primary read starting on the flat route and progressing to the deeper crossing or corner route if the underneath defender sits.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he bites hard on the run fake the flat route is wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or shallow linebackers are more susceptible to the play-action freeze that this concept is built to exploit. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, Cover 3 and Cover 1 shells are more vulnerable since the sprint out isolates the flat defender against the underneath route combo. Post-snap, track user controlled defenders flowing to the sprint out side, a smart human defender can sit in the flat and take away the primary read, forcing a check to the backside crosser. Watch for edge blitzes or contain rushers on the sprint out side, since a disciplined edge defender can force the quarterback to throw off platform or eat pressure before routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the run fake actually threatens the defense and freezes linebackers.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks or Cover 3 shells, since the sprint out action attacks flat defenders before zone defenders can fully rotate.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with corners sitting deep, hot route the flat man to a quick out or speed out to beat aggressive underneath defenders jumping the route.

Pair this play with 26 Duo or HB Stretch earlier in a drive to build run recognition, then dial up PA Sprint HB Flat once linebackers start crashing downhill on run fakes.

Use PA Boot Rt or PA Ctr Waggle as a change up later in the sequence since they attack the opposite edge and keep the defense honest against sprint out action from either direction.
