Breakdown

Skinny Posts out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel sends both outside receivers on skinny post routes that break sharply at the top of their stem toward the middle of the field, converging near the deep hash. The two inside receivers (or slot/TE alignments) run inside out flat routes toward the sideline, clearing the underneath area and stretching the zone horizontally while the posts stretch it vertically. The lone running back stays in to check block or leaks out on a shallow drag, giving the quarterback a five step drop with a clean pocket to work the two post breaks against the deep middle. This is a man beater concept built to attack single high safety looks, using the skinny post angle to separate against trailing corners and split the safety while the flat routes hold off underneath defenders.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth and alignment since a single high safety indicates man or Cover 3, both of which the skinny posts are designed to exploit. Watch the cornerback's press or off alignment on the outside receivers, as tight man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability for this concept. Post snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, since a slow or shallow drop leaves the throwing lane to the post routes wide open. User the deep safety and sit him in the passing lane between the two post routes to bait the quarterback into an interception window. This play struggles against two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, since the safeties can rotate over and squeeze the post routes before they reach the middle of the field.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre snap since the skinny post angle is designed to split the safety and beat man coverage on the break point.

Use the flat routes as your first read against Cover 2 or Cover 4 looks where the underneath defenders sink, giving you an easy completion before working back to the posts.

Hot route the running back into a check release or quick flat if you see a blitz look, since this play has minimal built in protection help against pressure.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Quick Slants in your call sheet to keep defenses honest on shorter routes before hitting them with the skinny posts on early downs.

Best used on second or third and medium situations where you have time to let the posts develop, and avoid calling it into known zone blitz packages that bring extra rushers through the middle read the qb is trying to hit.
