Breakdown

Corner Strike out of Singleback Ace with 12 personnel sends both outside receivers on deep corner routes, with the left side breaking into a corner off a deep out stem and the right side receiver running a vertical release into a corner cut toward the sideline. The two inside receivers work shallow crossing routes underneath at the sticks, giving you a natural high low read between the deep corners and the underneath crossers. The running back releases up through the middle of the field on a vertical option route, giving you a check down or seam breaker versus zone drops. This is a man beater and zone beater combo play built to attack cornerbacks on an island deep while also giving you a quick underneath answer against soft zone coverage, and the primary read progression starts outside with the corner routes before working down to the crossing routes and finally to the back over the middle.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth and alignment. Single high shells leave the corners one on one deep, which is where this play does the most damage. Watch cornerback press alignment. Off man or zone corners can sink under the corner route and undercut the throw if the quarterback does not anticipate the break. Post snap, key any user controlled defender flashing into the deep corner passing lanes, since a lurking safety or corner can jump the route and turn it into a turnover. Look for linebackers sinking hard into the underneath crossing routes. If they widen out to cover the crossers, that opens throwing lanes for the corner routes over the top. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined deep defenders can take away both corner routes, forcing you down to the shallow crossers and the running back check down as your only answers.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and long when you need to stress the deep sideline and still have an underneath bailout route available.

Pre snap, identify if the cornerbacks are pressed or off. Press coverage favors the corner route beating them over the top, while off coverage means you should be ready to work the underneath crossers immediately.

If you see two high safeties rotate down into the corner route landing spots, hot route one of the crossing routes into a deeper dig or bench route to counter the extra help.

Against man coverage, trust your corner route receivers to win with separation at the top of the route and throw with anticipation before they fully turn upfield.
