WR Option out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel shows a two receiver split with the X running an option route off the ball, breaking outside and up the sideline against soft coverage or sitting down and settling versus a defender playing over the top. The TE to the boundary side runs a corner breaking route while the inline TE to the strong side runs a short option cut underneath, giving the quarterback a built in zone beater read against sit down defenders. The HB releases into the flat as a check down valve while the offensive line stays in max protect, and the primary progression starts with the X option route, works to the TE corner, then bails to the HB flat if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, identify single high versus two high safety shells. Single high often means the corner over the X option route has help, so expect him to squeeze the option earlier. If the corner aligns with heavy inside leverage, expect man coverage. The option route can break outside for separation since the defender is already cheating inside. Watch the flat defender and underneath zone droppers after the snap. If they widen quickly to the HB flat, the window for the TE option route opens up in the middle of the field. Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone. This play struggles against a spy or lurking linebacker who reads the TE option route and jumps the throw. Cover 3 and cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops shut this down hardest, especially if the flat and hook defenders stay patient instead of biting on the HB release.

Usage Tips

Presnap, look at the corner over the X option route. If he is playing off with outside leverage, hot route the option to break vertical for a big play against soft zone.

Against man coverage, the option route naturally beats aggressive corners because the receiver can settle or break away depending on the defender's hips, so trust the read instead of forcing the TE corner.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the HB flat route gives you a safe checkdown if the option and corner routes are blanketed.

Pair this play with HB Stretch or Inside Zone earlier in a series so linebackers bite on run action, opening up the option route for a bigger gain over the middle.

Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting on the shallow TE option route. If he flashes there, immediately climb the progression to the deep TE corner route.
