FL Under is a play-action flood concept out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that attacks the underneath and intermediate zones of the field. The backside receiver runs a deep comeback while the flanker on the play side releases into an under route sitting behind the sticks, the outside receiver on that side clears vertical on a corner route, and the running back leaks out to the flat after selling the play-action fake, creating a three-level flood to that side. The primary read progression starts with the corner route as a hole shot against Cover 3, works down to the under route as the man beater against man coverage, and checks off to the flat if the underneath defenders squeeze the middle.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow, aggressive linebackers signal they are keying the run fake and will vacate the underneath throwing lanes for the under route. Track the flat defender on the play action fake because if he bites hard on the running back leak, the corner route behind him will be wide open for an explosive gain. Against man coverage, look for the corner cornerback to trail the vertical route tightly, which tells you the under route breaking underneath him is the cleanest separation window. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot over the under route since aggressive defenders can jump this route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and no seam help over the top is the shell that gets beaten worst by the corner route, while disciplined zone drops with a deep half safety over the corner route can take away the top of this concept and force you to check down to the flat.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when you want to establish play-action off your run game since the fake will hold linebackers and freeze the second level defenders. Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth: a single high safety tells you Cover 3 or Cover 1 is likely, which opens up the corner route as your first read. If you see two deep safeties, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and lean on the under route since the flat defender will be occupied by the corner route stretching him vertically. Hot route the backside comeback into a deeper dig or post if you are getting single coverage on the backside and want to attack a bigger chunk play. Pair this call with HB Dive or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to sell the run fake, then hit FL Under once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill.
