FL Under is a play-action flood concept out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that attacks Cover 3 and man coverage with a three level stretch to one side. The flanker runs a deep corner from the backside while the play side stacks a seam route, an out breaking route from the slot, and a flat route from the backfield after the fake, creating a high low read on the flat defender and the seam defender. The tight end blocks down to sell run action before the flat route releases, giving the quarterback a clean progression from seam to out to flat depending on how the defense rotates.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth, a single high safety often signals Cover 3 which this flood concept is built to exploit. Watch the flat defender's initial step after the snap, if he widens too fast the seam route sits in the vacated zone. Against man coverage, look for the slot defender's technique on the out route, outside leverage invites an easy pitch and catch underneath. If the defense shows a two high shell with corners playing off, expect the corner route on the backside to be the bigger risk reward shot. Blitz heavy fronts can disrupt the play fake timing, so identify if extra rushers are crashing before the flat route has time to develop.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when defenses expect run action off Ace personnel, since the play fake holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.
Key the flat defender first, if he sinks with the flat route the seam window opens up immediately behind him.
Pair this with HB Dive or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the play fake actually freezes second level defenders.
Against man coverage, hot route the backside flanker's deep corner into a quicker option if you need a faster outlet versus a blitz look.
Sequence this with PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Boot Roll to keep defenses guessing on which flood route is the primary threat.
