Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and corner alignment presnap, if they are shaded to the motion side expect a hard edge set that forces you to cut it up inside. Key the defensive end or edge rusher's first step, if he crashes down inside on the run fit that opens the perimeter lane for the sweep. Identify contain defenders and spy linebackers, disciplined edge defenders who stay home on the jet motion will blow this play up before the ball carrier can turn the corner. Look for overloaded run fits or extra defenders in the box, since numbers advantage on the edge kills this play against gap sound defenses. Man coverage on the backside receiver with no safety help over the top is a green light indicator that the defense is selling out to stop the run, so consider checking to a play-action shot instead.

Usage Tips

Use presnap motion speed to bait linebackers into overpursuing before the snap so you can read their leverage on the flat defender.

Call this against defenses that show heavy inside blitz looks since the edge speed will outrun defensive ends crashing down on run fits.

Pair this with HB Dive or Inside Zone from the same Ace formation to keep linebackers honest and slow their jet motion diagnosis.

On third and short, run this to attack overaggressive defensive ends who crash hard on outside zone tendencies.

Sequence this with PA Jet Sweep or Zone Fake Jet later in the drive once the defense starts keying jet motion, since the fake will freeze linebackers who bit on the real sweep earlier.
