Breakdown

PA Deep In runs off a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before attacking the middle of the field with a deep in route from the inline TE, who crosses the field on a hard break at roughly 15 yards. The backside TE runs a corner route that clears out the deep third, while the outlet TE releases underneath on a shallow drag and the HB checks down to a flat route out of the backfield after chipping. The isolated X receiver runs a deep dig from the numbers back toward the middle, giving the quarterback a two level read on that side. Primary progression starts with the deep in from the crossing TE, works to the isolated dig if the middle is clogged, and checks down to the flat or drag against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties before the snap, this indicates zone coverage and tells you the deep in route will have to split the underneath zone defenders. Watch the middle linebacker's initial step, if he bites hard on the run fake the deep in route will be wide open behind him. Key the flat defender on the crossing TE's side, if he sinks with the in route instead of staying in his zone, the shallow drag or HB flat becomes the easy answer. Cover 3 with a hard flowing linebacker to the run action is the biggest liability against this play, the deep in route sits right in the vacated window. Man coverage with an underneath spy or a Tampa 2 shell with two deep safeties can take away the deep in route, forcing you to check down quickly before the corner route defender can help over the top.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake with a stick or commit to it fully so linebackers bite and open passing lanes for the deep in route.

Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses are still respecting inside zone tendencies from this personnel group.

Check the deep safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety shaded to the crossing TE's route, work the dig route on the opposite side instead.

Motion the HB or use a hot route to adjust the flat route into a wheel if you diagnose man coverage, this creates natural leverage against a trailing linebacker.

Pair this with Mtn Wide Zone or HB Zone Wk earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit them with this shot play for explosive yardage.
