Breakdown

Z Spot out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel is a five man route concept built to attack zone coverage, particularly Cover 3. The backside X and TE run a flat and out combo to the left while the frontside stacks a corner route, a spot route sitting down in the underneath zone, and an angle route from the backfield that flares to the flat. The primary read starts with the spot route sitting in the hole against Cover 3, then works to the flat and angle route as the checkdown against man pressure or if the underneath defender jumps the spot.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: a single high safety indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which this concept is designed to attack with the spot route sitting in the zone hole. Watch the flat defender post-snap since Z Spot lives on manipulating that defender, if he sinks too deep the spot route is open underneath, if he stays shallow the corner route or angle route becomes the answer. Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can clog the corner route window, so be ready to check the ball down to the angle route or flat route quickly against those shells. User controlled linebackers sitting in the shallow hook zone can jump the spot route, so scan the flat and angle routes as immediate outlets if you see a linebacker sitting flat footed reading the quarterback's eyes. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the running back is a green light for the angle route, since that mismatch consistently wins against slower defenders in space.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since this concept is designed to exploit the Cover 3 hole where the spot route settles between the flat defender and the deep third defender.

Hot route the angle route into a quicker flat if you see man coverage from a linebacker on the running back, since the angle route can beat man matchups with the extra spacing.

Use this on early downs or third and short since the spot route conversion is quick and reliable underneath, keeping the offense on schedule.

Pair Z Spot with PA Post Dig or PA Flood out of the same Ace formation to keep linebackers honest, since the run action and play-action shots complement the quick game look of Z Spot.

If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard spinning safety, prioritize the spot route read first since the underneath defender flowing to the flat opens the window for the sit route.
