Double Hitch is a Singleback Ace 12 personnel pass play built around quick, high percentage throws. Both the X and Y receivers run hitch routes at roughly ten yards, sitting down in front of underneath zone defenders, while the slot TE runs a quick option/hitch that can settle inside or turn upfield depending on leverage, and the backside TE runs a vertical seam to hold the safety and open up the middle of the field. The primary read progression starts with the two outside hitches based on cornerback depth, then works to the inside TE option route as a checkdown against a soft underneath zone, with the vertical seam serving as a big play window against man coverage or blown zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch for cornerbacks playing off coverage at seven or more yards pre snap, that alignment invites the hitch throw immediately at the top of the route. Identify two high safety shells since that usually means softer underneath zones that let both hitches sit down cleanly for easy completions. Key on the middle linebacker depth and drop angle, a shallow drop or blitz look opens the inside TE option route as a quick answer against man pressure. Man coverage on the backside TE with no safety help over the top is the green light to push the vertical seam for a explosive gain. Be wary of user controlled defenders sitting in the underneath hook zones since they can jump the inside TE route or the near side hitch if the quarterback holds the ball too long.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short or medium distance since the hitch routes give you a built in sit read against soft zone coverage. Pre snap, check for two high safeties, that shell signals the hitches will have room to settle before the corners can close, while a single high safety look tells you to prioritize the seam route on the backside TE against man coverage. Hot route the slot TE hitch into a speed out if you see the defense sinking hard into underneath zones so you can attack the flat before the linebacker can flow over.
