Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive linemen and linebackers crashing hard upfield off the snap, which is the biggest tell that the offense is setting up a screen look. If you are playing linebacker, avoid overpursuing the vertical releases and instead keep eyes on the HB leaking out of the backfield. User a linebacker or safety and sit just outside the tackle box to jump the screen lane before the lead blockers get set. Zone coverages with a linebacker spying the backfield or a safety reading run/pass keys can blow this play up before the HB gets to the edge. Man coverage with heavy blitz packages is the most vulnerable shell against this play, so if you see man alignment combined with extra rushers, respect the screen and hold your rush lanes.

Usage Tips

Call this against defenses that show blitz pressure pre-snap, especially six or seven man rush looks where linebackers or safeties are creeping toward the box.

Snap the ball quickly after the play call so the rush has less time to diagnose the screen and rally back to the flat.

Use the vertical releases from the tight ends and outside receiver to hold linebackers and safeties in their drops instead of letting them sit and read the backfield.

Pair this with HB Dive, HB Draw, or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so defenders key on the run action and bite on the blitz, making the screen hit for bigger yardage.

Best used on early downs or in third and short situations against overly aggressive Madden opponents who blitz on tendency, since a well timed slip screen can turn a blitz into an explosive gain.
