Mtn Inside Zone is a zone run out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that uses jet motion across the formation before the snap to influence the second level. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to linebackers based on flow, while the HB reads the play side A gap first before bouncing to the B gap cutback lane if the initial hole is clogged. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap integrity rather than beat a specific coverage, with the primary read progression going frontside A gap, then B gap cutback based on the flow of the diving linemen and linebacker fills.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if the linebackers are sitting shallow and flowing hard to the play side motion this run has a natural cutback lane available. Identify defensive tackle alignment, a shaded nose or 3 technique can blow up the frontside double team and force an early cutback read. Look for scrape exchange blitzes from the defense, where the defensive end crashes inside and the linebacker scrapes outside, since this exchange is designed specifically to shut down inside zone cutbacks. Check for a stacked box with 8 or more defenders, which signals the defense is selling out against the run and this play should be checked out of at the line. Man coverage on the motion man with no safety rotation to the box usually means light numbers for the run, so trust the interior double teams and hit the hole downhill.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender assigned to the motion man runs with him across the formation you are facing man principles and the box should be favorable for the run. Check the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety often means an extra run defender in the box so be ready to bounce this outside if the alignment looks stacked. Pair this play with HB Stretch and HB Counter in the same set to keep linebackers honest on flow and cutback lanes, since all three plays start with similar zone action but attack different gaps. Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay on schedule, and mix in Zone Fake Jet or Jet Sweep out of the same look to keep defenses from keying the initial motion. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look presnap with linebackers crashing downhill, consider hot routing the FB or checking to a quick game concept since inside zone struggles against gap exchange blitzes.
