Mtn HB Lead Misdirection is a run play out of Singleback Ace 12 personnel that opens with a hard flow fake to one side before the lead blocker and HB counter back against the grain. The fullback style lead TE or H-back leads through the hole to seal the first man off the edge while the offensive line flows with the initial fake to sell the misdirection to flowing linebackers. This is a gap scheme run designed to punish aggressive, over pursuing defenses, and the primary read is the play side linebacker flow followed by the lead blocker's kick out or seal on the force defender.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the linebackers are shaded hard to the initial flow side, since overcommitted second level defenders are the primary weakness this play exploits. Check safety alignment, single high shells with linebackers keying run flow will bite the fake harder and are more vulnerable to the cutback lane. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting still or spying instead of flowing, disciplined defenders who stay home on misdirection can blow this play up at the mesh point. Look for defensive ends or edge defenders crashing hard down the line, if they stay patient and read the pulling blocker they can string this out and force a negative play. Gap sound fronts with linebackers reading blocking patterns instead of flowing to initial motion are the toughest matchup, since disciplined eyes neutralize the misdirection element entirely.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs after you have already shown Mtn Wide Zone or Mtn Inside Zone to the same side so linebackers are conditioned to flow hard and bite on the misdirection.

Watch pre-snap linebacker depth, if they are stacked tight and creeping toward the line of scrimmage this play hits even harder because their aggressive downhill trigger works against them.

Use the lead blocker as your primary key, if he climbs to seal the edge defender outside, stay patient behind him and let the cutback develop instead of forcing it upfield immediately.

Pair this with HB Misdirection Mtn or HB Counter Str in your play calling script so the defense cannot key off formation tendencies and start jumping the misdirection action.

Best used on second and short or first and ten in normal down and distance situations where defenses are not yet in predictable pass rush or dime packages.
