Breakdown

Mtn Duo Wrap is a Duo run scheme out of Singleback Wing Slot with a pre-snap wing motion across the formation to adjust numbers at the point of attack. The offensive line covers down with double team blocks at the point of attack while the lead blocker wraps around to seal the edge, giving the running back a downhill lane with a cutback option. This is a power run play designed to move the pile with double teams up front, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the running back reading the double team push and picking his gap before working to the wrapping blocker's edge lane.

Defensive Reads

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box this play will struggle against the double teams. Watch the play side linebacker depth, if he is sitting shallow and square he can beat the wrap block and blow up the lane before the back gets to the edge. Identify if the defense is running a run blitz or nano blitz off the edge, since a fast edge defender can beat the wrap blocker to the spot and force a negative play. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and should push you toward a different run concept or a play-action counter instead. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and linebacker fit, if they stay disciplined and read the double team quickly, the cutback lane disappears and the back has to bounce it outside into unblocked defenders.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the top, which tells you whether the defense is keying run or staying in a base shell.

Run this play into a light box, ideally five defenders or fewer in the box after checking the pre-snap alignment, since Duo schemes rely on double teams winning at the point of attack.

Manually control the wrap blocker if you have the reps to spare so you can seal the correct edge defender instead of relying on the AI's blocking logic.

Pair Mtn Duo Wrap with Mtn HB Zone WK and HB Zone Wk in the same set to keep defenders guessing between gap and zone run schemes, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you want to establish the run and set up play-action shots like PA Power O or PA TE Scissors later in the series.
