Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Slot that opens with jet motion across the formation to sell the outside run action before the QB pulls and works a simple route concept. The diagram shows a single receiver at the top running a vertical stem while the offensive line executes zone run blocking steps to disguise the play fake, with a route breaking flat to the boundary along the line of scrimmage. This is a play-action zone beater designed to hold linebackers and safeties on the run fake before the QB attacks the space vacated underneath, with the primary read starting on the flat route and progressing to the vertical route if the defense bites hard on the jet action.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the defense is stacked in the box expecting run, since that is when the fake jet action will hold linebackers longest. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he crashes down on the jet motion fake, the flat route will be wide open for an easy completion. Man coverage on the outside receiver is the biggest tell that this play will win, since the vertical route can stack the defender after the run fake freezes his eyes. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with disciplined linebackers who do not bite on the fake will shut this down quickly by sitting underneath and taking away the flat. If a blitz is showing pre-snap, especially an edge blitz to the fake jet side, this play can get exposed since the play fake buys almost no protection time.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when the defense is still respecting the run and linebackers are sitting close to the box.
Watch for safeties creeping down pre-snap, that is your cue defenders are keying run and will bite on the fake jet motion.
If the cornerback follows the jet motion man to man, hot route the vertical receiver into a quicker breaking route to exploit the space he vacates.
Pair this with Jet Sweep or Jet HB Power earlier in the drive so the defense starts respecting the actual jet run, making this fake hit harder later.
Avoid calling this against heavy zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 unless you have already established the run fake credibility, since zone defenders will just sit in their drops.
