Jet PA Power uses jet motion across the backfield to sell the sweep before the QB fakes the handoff on a play-action power look. Off the fake, three receivers attack downfield: the jet motion man breaks out to the flat/comeback on the far left, a deep vertical seam route splits the middle of the field, and a corner route stems outside and up the sideline on the right, while a check release out of the backfield underneath gives the QB a safety valve. This is a play-action shot play designed to beat aggressive run support and single-high man coverage, with the deep corner or seam route as the primary read depending on how the safety rotates post-snap.
Defensive Reads
Key the safety depth and leverage before the snap. Two deep safeties who stay split post-snap signal zone coverage, which opens the seam route between the hashes. Watch the flow of the linebackers on the play-action fake. If they bite hard on the power run action, the seam and corner routes will have wide throwing lanes behind them. Identify man coverage by checking if the cornerback on the corner route route mirrors the receiver's release with no help over the top, which tells you the corner route can win one on one. Beware of user-controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle or lurking the seam, since a smart user will bait the QB into the vertical route and jump the throw. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a blitz, the check release out of the backfield becomes the QB's fastest outlet if the pass rush closes the pocket before the deep routes develop.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense has shown run blitz or heavy box counts on tape, since the jet motion and power fake are most effective against defenses selling out to stop the run.
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment. If you see a single-high safety cheating toward the box, throw the corner route with anticipation before the safety can rotate over the top.
If the defense shows two-high shell and holds it after the snap, work the seam route against the middle linebacker or nickel defender, since that indicates zone coverage with a hole in the intermediate middle.
Hot route the check release back to a flat route if you see man coverage with no underlying zone defender, giving you an easy completion versus blitz looks.
Pair this play with PA Power O or 26 Duo earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on run action, then hit them with Jet PA Power once they start crashing linebackers and safeties downhill.
