Jet HB Power out of Singleback Wing Slot is a gap scheme run play that uses jet motion across the formation before the snap to draw the defense laterally and hold the edge defender. The offensive line pulls the backside guard through the hole while the fullback or extra blocker leads through as the point man, and the tailback presses the hole off the down blocks before bursting through the power gap behind the pulling guard. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to key the down blocks first, then read the pulling guard and lead blocker to decide whether to press the A or B gap or bounce outside off the kickout block.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side linebacker before the snap, if he widens or flows hard with the jet motion the power gap will be clean for the pulling guard. Watch the edge defender or defensive end on the play side, if he crashes down on the down block the ball carrier should bounce outside off the lead blocker. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or has a linebacker stacked tight to the line, since a fast-flowing blitzer can beat the pulling guard to the hole and blow up the play. Look at safety depth before the snap, a safety cheating down into the box signals run support and makes this power run tougher to convert for positive yardage. Man coverage shells with linebackers locked on the fullback or blocker in space are more vulnerable, while stacked fronts with disciplined gap integrity and quick-flowing linebackers can shut this run down.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the motion man, then hand the ball off away from that flow to hit the vacated gap.
Call this on early downs, especially first and second down, when you need a balanced run threat that also sets up misdirection later in the drive.
Watch for defenses that flow hard with the jet motion or shift their linebackers, since that tells you the alley will be wide open on the play side.
Pair this with PA Jet Sweep or Jet Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect both the motion fake and the true handoff, forcing linebackers to freeze on their run fits.
If the defense stacks the box with extra defenders to stop the power run, check into Jet 6 Drive Wheel or PA Boot Y Leak to attack the vacated coverage behind the aggressive front.
