PA Y Cross Flood is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel that uses a flood concept to one side while the Y (tight end) runs a deep crosser through the middle of the field. The play-action fake freezes the front seven and linebackers, opening throwing lanes for the crosser against zone drops, while the flood side stacks three levels (deep, intermediate, flat) to overload a single side of the defense against man or zone coverage. Your primary read starts with the flood side to identify if the defense rolls to that overload, and if the deep safety bites on the flood or the crosser clears the middle linebacker, come back to the Y Cross for the big chunk play, especially versus Cover 3 where the middle of the field is vacated.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap since Cover 1 and Cover 3 are the primary shells this play is designed to exploit through the crosser sitting behind the linebackers Watch for the middle linebacker's post-snap drop, if he sinks deep into a hook zone the crosser will be tightly covered so look to the flood side immediately Key the flat defender on the flood side, if he sprints out to the flat receiver too early the intermediate route in that flood concept will be wide open Beware of a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow crosser lane, known as a lurk threat, since that will bait a quick interception if the quarterback stares down the middle read Cover 4 and Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties shut this down more effectively since they have help over the crosser and can still rotate coverage to the flood side without conceding a big play Look for disguised blitzes that show zone pre-snap then bring extra rushers, since the play-action fake takes time to develop and a fast interior pressure can collapse the pocket before the crosser clears

Usage Tips

Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap because a shallow drop signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which is exactly what this play is designed to punish with the Y crosser sitting in the void

Use play-action rollouts sparingly here since the fake needs to sell against run-heavy tendencies, so pair this call after establishing 26 Duo or HB Power O earlier in the drive to get linebackers biting on the mesh point

If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, prioritize the flood side flat and intermediate routes since the crosser will have less room against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving you a quick answer versus blitz looks

Sequence this play with PA Y-poco or PA Fork Y-Dig later in the game once the defense adjusts to the crosser, since those plays attack similar zones with different timing to keep defenders guessing

Best called on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more willing to sit in zone shells rather than blitz
