HB Power O out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard to lead through the hole while the fullback (or extra blocker) kicks out the edge defender at the point of attack. The offensive line down blocks in unison to seal the interior, creating a natural running lane for the HB as he presses the line and follows his puller. This is a pure power run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the mesh point, read the down blocks up front, then locate the pulling blocker and stay tight off his hip through the hole.

Defensive Reads

Look for a light box pre-snap, if the defense has only five or six defenders in the box the power scheme has a clean numbers advantage. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they are crashing hard down inside they can blow up the kick out block before the puller arrives. Key the Mike linebacker's downhill trigger, a disciplined linebacker who reads the pulling guard and fills the alley can stop this play for a minimal gain. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side edge will collapse the lane the puller is trying to create, so be ready to cut back if the front overpursues. Stacked eight man boxes or heavy blitz packages sent right at the point of attack neutralize the pulling guard's angle and shut this play down.

Usage Tips

Run this against base fronts and light boxes where the defense shows six or fewer defenders in the box, since the extra puller needs numbers advantage to work.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Sam are sitting tight to the line you may want to check to an outside run or bubble to avoid a stacked box.

Use HB Power O early in a series to set up PA Power O later, since the play-action version off the same look punishes linebackers who key run fits too aggressively.

On the sticks or in short yardage, this play excels because the double down blocks and pulling guard create a hard numbers edge at the point of attack.

Mix in HB Ace Power or Off Tackle from the same set to keep defenses guessing on which gap the pulling blocker will hit.
