HB Toss Strong is a perimeter run play out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel that gets the ball to the outside edge quickly, using the extra tight end and wing back to seal the strong side. The offensive line pulls to create a wall while the fullback or wing motions to lead block, forcing the defense to win with edge contain rather than gap discipline. The primary read is patience: let the blocks develop, identify the first color you see (usually a pulling guard or wing lead blocker) and follow him to the alley, cutting inside if the edge is squeezed or bouncing outside if the corner is sealed.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth before the snap. Two high shells with soft edges are prime toss windows because the corner has to fight through blocks alone. Watch the strong side outside linebacker or edge defender's first step. If he crashes down the line, the toss should bounce outside immediately behind the blockers. Identify scrape exchange linebackers who replace the crashing edge defender. This look kills the toss unless you can cut it back against the grain. Look for user controlled defenders flying downhill from depth. Aggressive user aggression can be exploited if you cut the run before the blocking wall breaks down. Beware of eight man fronts and run blitzes stacked to the strong side, since the numbers advantage disappears and the pulling linemen get engaged before reaching the alley.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run heavy personnel look on early downs, second and short, or when you have already established inside zone and power looks to keep the defense honest.

Check the edge defender and strong side corner pre-snap. If they are crashing hard inside or sitting in a tight run fit, this toss can bounce outside before the defense can rotate.

User the lead blocker with the fullback or wing icon and manually seal the first defender in the alley instead of letting the CPU logic whiff on the edge rusher.

Pair this play with HB Zone Wk or Off Tackle in the same set to keep linebackers guessing between inside zone tracks and outside toss angles.

Avoid calling this against aggressive edge blitz packages or scrape exchange fronts unless you have already sold the defense on inside run plays like 26 Duo or HB Dive.
