Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to a single high look, since this concept is designed to exploit Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone drops. Key the flat defender's depth at the snap, if he sinks too deep chasing the sail route the underneath window opens for the dig immediately. Watch for a user lurking in the middle of the field zone, since a smart defender sitting on the dig route can jump the primary throw and bait a turnover. If you see man coverage disguised as zone with corners pressed at the line, the dig route can get picked off underneath by a trailing linebacker, so be ready to check down to the flat instead. A hard blitz off the edge with no play-action freeze can beat this play, so watch linebacker depth pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out fast on the sail route if extra rushers are showing.
