PA Stretch is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel that sells the outside zone stretch run before releasing receivers into the pattern, making it a strong zone beater against teams that key run fits from linebackers and safeties. The offensive line and TEs execute zone-stretch blocking steps to sell the run action, pulling flowing linebackers and second-level defenders toward the play side before the quarterback pulls it back for the pass. The primary read progression starts with the deep outside route to attack cheating corners and overplayed run support, then works down to the intermediate crosser or drag as the checkdown against sunk zone coverage.
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks and linebackers aligned tight to the box, this tells you the defense respects the zone run and will bite on the play fake. Watch cornerback press alignment on the play side, if they are playing off and soft you have room to work the deep out or corner route against man coverage. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they step hard toward the run fake before recovering, the window for the intermediate crosser opens up against man or zone alike. Beware defenses running Cover 3 or Cover 4 match with disciplined linebackers who stay square and do not bite on the fake, since the underneath routes will be sat on by zone defenders reading quarterback eyes. User-controlled defenders who stay home instead of crashing on the run fake, especially a lurking linebacker or safety in the middle of the field, can jump the crossing route and turn this into a pick six if the quarterback locks on too early.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage where defenses expect the outside zone run based on personnel and formation tendencies. Check the box count and safety depth before the snap, if you see one high safety cheating up or linebackers flowing hard to stretch runs from HB Stretch or Mtn HB Zone WK, this is your green light. Use hot routes to convert the underneath crosser into a quick out or spot route if the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with flat zone defenders sitting on the drag. Sequence this play after establishing HB Stretch, HB Zone Wk, and Mtn Wide Zone Wk earlier in the drive so the linebackers and safeties are conditioned to bite on the zone stretch action. Avoid calling this into obvious pass-heavy down and distance like third and long since the run fake loses its threat and defenses will sit in zone drops rather than triggering downhill.
