U Drive from Singleback Wing Slot is a Cover 4 beater built around a shallow drive concept combined with vertical stretches. The backside X runs a vertical clear route, the outside TE/slot runs a corner route to occupy the deep quarter, the drive man works underneath from the formation strong side across the field, another receiver runs a shallow drag under that, and the RB releases into a flat route to hold the linebacker. The primary read starts with the drive route crossing the field, then works to the corner route against Cover 4 rotation, checking down to the flat if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth and width before the snap, if both safeties sit at 10 to 12 yards with even spacing that is Cover 4 and the corner route should have a soft window against the quarter defender. Watch the flat defender key on the running back release, a squatting linebacker there signals zone and tells you to keep working the drive route across the field. If the corner presses the outside receiver at the line, expect man coverage underneath and prioritize the drag or flat as your quicker option. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane will jump the drive route, so double check the middle of the field for a lurking Mike linebacker before committing to that throw. Blitz heavy fronts with a Will or Sam crashing off the edge can disrupt the timing of the drive route, so identify the extra rusher pre snap and be ready to check to the flat as your outlet.
Usage Tips
Look for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly pre snap, that is your Cover 4 or Cover 2 shell indicator and this play is designed to punish it. Hot route the flat route to a flat vs man beater like a slant if you see man press alignment on the outside corner. Use this on early downs to set up PA Boot TE Leak or PA Boot Y Sail later in the drive since the play action off this formation mirrors the same landmarks. Throw the drive route on rhythm at the top of your drop if the underneath linebackers bail into zone drops, do not wait on it against man coverage. Pair this with Y Stick or Quick Slant in your play calling script to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the deeper drive concept out of the same personnel.
