U Drive out of Singleback Wing Slot is a Cover 4 beater built around a drive route combo with a deep dig from the backside. The play design shows the outside receiver on the left running a vertical clear-out while the inline TE (X) runs the classic drive route, breaking flat and stemming behind it across the middle. On the strong side, the slot X runs an underneath drag to the flat while the outside receiver runs a deep in/dig marked in red that crosses the field, and the wing X releases on a shallow flat check-down route underneath everything. The primary read progression starts with the dig on the drive route (the shallow-to-intermediate crosser), then works to the deep in/dig breaking across the field, and finally checks down to the flat and shallow drag routes underneath if the middle of the field is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties or a single high look with soft corners signals the drive and dig routes will have room to work. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to cover the shallow drive route the deep dig will be open behind them. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is vulnerable to the deep in cutting across the field, so user the deep safety to the crossing route side immediately. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can jump the shallow drag and flat routes, so be ready to climb the progression to the dig instead of forcing it underneath. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are risky against this concept since the quick drive route acts as a built in answer against pressure, so identify blitz packages pre-snap and get the ball out fast if the protection cannot hold up.

Usage Tips

Look for Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells pre-snap since the drive concept and deep dig are designed to exploit soft zone drops from quarters coverage.

Motion the wing X or use a hot route to convert the shallow flat route into a quick option if you see man coverage with no help over the top.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short to long situations where the deep dig has room to sit down against zone drops.

Pair U Drive with PA Y Cross Flood or PA Dagger in the same set to keep defenses honest against both play action and drop back reads off similar formation looks.

If the user drops a linebacker into the drive route window, progress immediately to the deep dig since it is designed to work behind that exact zone drop.
