Slot Post out of Singleback Wing Slot with 12 personnel shows a four man route concept with the inline TE running a corner route to the boundary, the slot receiver breaking on the post over the middle, the wing TE running a quick out to the flat, and the backside X running a whip route out of the backfield to the opposite flat. This is a man beater built around the deep post creating a natural pick and separation window against man coverage while the flat routes stretch the underneath defenders horizontally. Primary read progression starts with the post over the middle, works to the corner route on the boundary, and checks down to the flat routes if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety rotating late, if he sits over the slot receiver's post route the throw window closes and you should redirect to the corner route or flat Identify man coverage by checking the cornerback's press alignment on the slot receiver, tight press with no safety help over the top is the green light to trust the post Look for a linebacker sitting in a hook zone at the second level, that defender can jump the post route if the quarterback holds the ball too long, so timing the throw before he flows underneath is critical Beware of user controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field on Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, they can rob the post route and turn it into a defensive placed near the sticks Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut this down fastest since the post runs directly into the deep middle zone defender, in that case check down to the flat routes immediately after the snap

Usage Tips

Use this against man coverage shells since the deep post is designed to work off natural rub action from the underneath crossers and creates instant separation versus man defenders trailing from depth

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see a single high safety shaded to the slot side the post route becomes tougher, so be ready to hot route it into a deeper seam or bail to the corner route instead

Motion the wing TE before the snap to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion it confirms man coverage and you should stick with the post as your first read

Pair this play with Y-go Slot Cross or Four Verticals in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect vertical shots every snap, setting up the post to hit big against overplayed underneath zones

Best used on second and medium or third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage looking to force a quick throw, since the post takes a beat to develop but pays off with YAC potential
