Breakdown

Y Stick from Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel is a classic Stick concept built for quick, high percentage throws against man and zone alike. To the closed side, the TE runs a shallow stick route settling outside while the wing back releases outside to a corner route stretching the flat defender vertically, creating a natural high low with the TE stick underneath. On the backside, the receiver runs a shallow drag across the field working away from the concept for a scheme adjustment or checkdown, while the single WR to the field side runs a deep vertical release stretching the cornerback and holding the safety. The primary read starts with the stick route underneath, works to the corner route for the high low, and comes back to the backside drag if the flat and stick defenders squeeze the concept.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check corner depth and alignment on the wing receiver, if the corner is playing off, the stick route sits in an easy throwing window underneath. Key the flat or curl defender to the stick side, if he sinks hard to take away the stick, the corner route behind him should be open for a bigger gain. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the stick window, this is the most common way defenders shut down the concept, so be ready to reset to the corner route or the backside drag. Cover 3 with a hard closing curl to flat defender is the toughest shell against this concept, since it can take away both the stick and the corner in the same drop. Man coverage with underneath help leaves the corner route as the primary answer since it stretches the flat defender vertically before the linebacker can get depth.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to medium since the stick route settles quickly and gives you an immediate answer against both man and zone coverage.

Presnap, identify if the defense is showing a two high shell or single high look, since a single high safety usually means the corner route to the wing side has one on one coverage that can be exploited.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route if you expect man coverage, this gives you a true man beater that clears underneath traffic.

Pair this play with PA Boot Y Sail or PA Y Cross Flood later in a series so the defense has to respect the play action boot after seeing the quick stick concept from the same formation.

Against zone heavy defenses, look to hit the stick route quickly before the flat defender can sink and take away the window, then progress to the corner route if the underneath defender jumps the stick.
