Breakdown

HB Power out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel is a gap scheme run play designed to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The diagram shows the offensive line pulling a backside blocker (typically the guard) around to lead through the hole while the frontside double team seals the edge, with the two outside wideouts stacked vertically to hold their cornerbacks and stalk block downfield. The HB takes the handoff and presses the line of scrimmage, reading the puller's block to decide between the front-side crease or bouncing outside if the edge gets sealed. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, so the primary read is the frontside double team and the pulling blocker rather than any coverage shell.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive line alignment before the snap: a shaded nose or 3 technique on the pulling side can blow up the play before the puller gets to the hole. Key the play side linebacker's depth, if he is sitting tight to the line at five yards or less he can beat the puller to the point of attack and force a cutback. Look for safety rotation into the box on run downs, since an extra defender stacked over the formation removes the leverage advantage this scheme is built on. Defenses that key pulling linemen and fire a linebacker or slot defender into the backfield gap will consistently blow this play up, so avoid calling it against known gap-shooting blitz packages. Man coverage on the two outside receivers with no safety help over the top signals a light box, which is the ideal trigger to call HB Power and let the stalk blocks spring the perimeter.

Usage Tips

Run this play into light boxes when the defense shows six or fewer defenders in the box pre-snap, since the pulling blocker needs room to work. Use motion or a quick pre-snap check to confirm the defense has not shifted a safety down into the box, which turns this into a numbers disadvantage against Power. Pair HB Power with PA Power O out of the same set so the defense has to respect the run fake before backing off into coverage, keeping linebackers honest. Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more likely to play base fronts instead of stacking the box for run support. Against aggressive defenses that crash hard on run tendencies, sequence in HB Misdirection or Counter U from this set to punish overpursuit off the same look.
