Breakdown

PA Y Drag from Singleback Wing Slot uses play-action to hold the linebackers before releasing the Y (TE) on a drag route across the middle at the second level. Both outside receivers push vertical up the seams to stretch the safeties deep while the drag sits underneath as the primary answer against zone drops, and the RB (blue route) kicks to the flat as a checkdown or man beater versus a linebacker who bails deep. The blocking scheme shows the offensive line staying home to sell the run fake before pass protection sets, giving the quarterback time to work through his drag read first, then climb to the vertical shots if the drag is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: a single-high look tells you the drag route has room to work in the void behind the linebackers. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sits and reads the drag immediately, look to the flat route or climb to a vertical instead. Watch for a lurking user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, that is the primary threat to this concept and will bait a quarterback into a turnover. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, the drag sits in the natural soft spot between the underneath zones, making it a strong zone beater. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers will empty the underneath drag lane quickly, so be ready to get the ball out fast off the play-action fake before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when defenses are keying run and biting on play action.

Look for linebackers cheating up pre-snap since that opens the drag route as an explosive gain across the middle.

If the defense shows single-high safety, target the drag first, if it shows two-high, be ready to hit the flat route or one of the verticals against a soft cushion.

Hot route the backside vertical into a deep comeback or hitch versus press man to give yourself a quick outlet if the drag gets picked up by a rat linebacker.

Pair this with PA Boot Y Sail or PA Y Cross Flood in the same drive to keep the defense honest on run fakes while attacking different levels of the field with similar action.
