Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel is an outside zone run play with the offensive line and both TEs flowing laterally to stretch the defense before the HB decides where to plant and cut. The diagram shows two TEs stacked to the play side with the OL executing zone steps to seal the edge, giving the runner a wide track to bounce outside or cut back if the frontside gets sealed. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and it functions as a zone beater against aggressive downhill run fits since it forces linebackers to flow horizontally before the ballcarrier commits vertically. The primary read progression for the HB is playside cutback lane first, then bend it outside if the edge defender gets reached blocked.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count, if there are eight or more defenders in the box with both safeties down this play gets clogged quickly and you should hot route or check to a pass. Watch the defensive ends and outside linebackers for crash-down keys, aggressive edge defenders that fly upfield open a natural cutback lane behind the zone flow. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled linebacker flowing hard playside to spy the stretch action, that lurk threat is exactly who you want to freeze with a strong cutback read. This run struggles against gap-sound 46 or Bear fronts and heavy blitz packages that get immediate penetration before the OL can reach the point of attack. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with fast flowing linebackers and disciplined edge setters will shut down the outside track, forcing the HB to cut back into traffic where the defense wants him.

Usage Tips

Run this out of 12 personnel when you see base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that lack extra run support in the box, since the double TE look baits linebackers into thinking heavy inside zone or power. Use pre-snap motion or a TE shift to identify if the defense is showing man or zone run fits, if the backside defensive end crashes hard down the line that tells you to bounce this outside immediately. Pair HB Stretch with HB Power O and Inside Zone Split from this same set so defenses cannot key on your zone steps versus gap scheme blocking, keeping linebackers honest and slow to flow. Best called on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when you want to set up PA Stretch or PA Boot TE Leak later in the series off the same zone action. Manually take control of your playside TE or wing blocker if the CPU AI whiffs on the edge seal, since winning that reach block is what turns this into a home run cutback play.
