Breakdown

Jet HB Slash lines up out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel with jet motion sweeping across the backfield before the snap to sell the sweep look. Off the fake, the HB slashes downhill through the line on what plays out as a designed run with the offensive line blocking straight ahead in a gap scheme, while the jet motion man releases vertically up the sideline as a decoy or outlet if the defense overpursues. This is fundamentally a run play built off jet motion misdirection, and the primary read is the HB hitting the interior gap based on the flow of the linebackers reacting to the sweep fake.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts its linebackers or safety toward the jet motion, which signals they are trained to key run flow rather than stay disciplined. Post-snap, user your fastest flowing linebacker to stay home on the interior gap instead of following the jet motion man, since the ball is staying with the HB most of the time. Watch for a scraping defensive end or edge defender who can crash down on the mesh point and blow up the handoff before the HB gets north and south. This run action struggles against gap-sound defenses with a strong safety spying downhill or defenses in a run-fit front like 46 Bear or heavy fronts that clog interior lanes. If the defense shows two high safeties and light box counts, the run lane opens up more consistently since there are fewer defenders to fill gaps quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this early in a series to establish the jet motion tendency so defenses respect the sweep and bite on future play-action or Jet Sweep calls out of the same look.

Watch linebacker flow before the snap and at the snap: if they crash hard toward the motion man's sweep path, the interior lane for the HB opens up immediately.

Pair this with PA Jet Sweep or Jet Sweep itself to keep defenses guessing between the actual handoff and the true jet sweep look, forcing bad run fits.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to respect run action and commit extra defenders toward the motion.

Avoid calling this against defenses that consistently stack the box or show a fast flow linebacker who reads through the mesh point instead of biting on the motion.
