HB Dive out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly through the A gap behind the fullback style push of the offensive line, with the two split receivers running off the corners to hold the deep defenders. The line uses a standard run block scheme, double teaming the interior defensive linemen to seal the middle while the backside blockers cut off pursuit. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the A gap first, then bounce to the B gap if the interior is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders, this play struggles against eight man fronts or heavy blitz looks since there is no extra gap protection. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the mike and will are sitting shallow and crashing hard downhill, this dive will get stuffed quickly. Identify if the defense is in a run blitz or A gap nano blitz package, since the dive lane can get filled instantly by a blitzing linebacker or defensive tackle stunt. Zone coverage shells with safeties staying deep tend to leave light boxes, which is where this dive hits hardest, cover 3 and cover 4 shells are prime opportunities. Man coverage with a single high safety often signals extra run support underneath, so be ready to bounce the run outside if the alley defenders crash too fast.
Usage Tips
Use HB Dive when you diagnose a light box pre-snap, ideally six or fewer defenders in the box, since the play lacks a lead blocker to handle extra defenders.
Check the defensive personnel before the snap, if you see nickel or dime packages on the field this play becomes very effective against lighter run fits.
Pair HB Dive with PA Boot Y Leak or PA FL Dive from the same formation so the defense respects the run action and opens up boot concepts off similar mesh points.
Run this on short yardage downs like third and one or second and short where a quick, decisive interior run gets the necessary yardage without exposing the ball carrier to negative plays.
If the defense keys run and stacks the box after a few reps, sequence into Inside Zone Split or 26 Duo to give a different track look while keeping the same run action fake for your play-action shots.
