Bubble Screen out of Singleback Wing Slot is a quick perimeter screen designed to get the ball out to the slot receiver in space immediately after the snap. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a corner release upfield to clear out the cornerback while the slot receiver sits underneath, drifting toward the sideline as the quick screen target. This is a classic zone beater and blitz beater: the fast throw negates delayed pass rush and exploits soft zone drops where the underneath defender bites on the outside vertical release, and the primary read is a pre-determined throw to the bubble receiver, with the outside route serving purely as a clear-out.
Pre-snap, identify the slot corner or nickel defender's depth and leverage, if he is sitting inside at five yards or less he can jump the bubble route and blow it up for a loss. Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with soft outside corners, these are the shells this play punishes hardest since the underneath defender has to honor the vertical clear-out route. User controlled defenders sitting in a shallow zone lurk spot are the biggest threat, if the CPU or human defender stays put underneath instead of biting on the outside release, sit on the bubble and jump it for a big loss or pick. Man coverage with a blitz behind it is the counter to this play, since the slot defender has no zone to sink into and can play the receiver straight up while extra rushers close the pocket fast. Watch linebacker flow post-snap, if they trigger hard downhill on the run fake or misread it as a run action, the bubble receiver gets extra cushion to turn upfield.
Call this on early downs or short yardage third downs when you need a high floor, low risk gain against zone heavy defenses. Pre-snap, look for cornerbacks playing off coverage or safeties rotating late, both indicate soft zone that lets the bubble receiver catch and turn upfield with room. If you see man coverage or a hard corner blitz look, hot route the outside receiver into a quick out or hitch to give yourself a faster release option instead of forcing the bubble into a jumped throw. Pair this with Jet Sweep and Jet HB Slash from the same Wing Slot set to condition the defense to fly to the perimeter, then hit them with PA Boot Y Sail or PA Y Corner off similar formation motion once linebackers start cheating outside. Get the ball out on time, do not hold it, this play lives and dies on timing against blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge.
