Breakdown
PA Rollout is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Slot 12 personnel that fakes the handoff and rolls the quarterback out to the right, simplifying the field into a half-field progression. The backside TE runs a corner route off the play-action fake, the frontside TE releases vertically up the seam before breaking outside, and the slot receiver runs an out to the flat while the outside receiver runs a deep out toward the sideline. The RB checks for blitz and releases to the underneath flat as a checkdown, giving the QB a clean flat to deep progression on the boot side.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two-high shells with soft corners invite the deep out and corner route combo. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because if they bite hard on the run fake it opens up the seam and flat routes underneath. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender flying downhill on the rollout since that lurk threat can jump the flat route and the checkdown. This play struggles against disciplined zone drops where the flat defender sits and the deep defenders stay over the top of the corner route. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receiver and TE can disrupt route timing, so look for the QB to bail to the RB checkdown against tight man beaters.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and short to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers before they get depth in coverage.
Read the flat defender first since the rollout mechanics put the QB on the move and shorten the throwing window on deeper routes.
If the cornerback jumps the deep out from the outside receiver, work back to the TE seam-to-corner route for the explosive shot.
Hot route the backside TE corner into a shallow drag against zone shells to give the QB a quick outlet if the pocket collapses on the edge.
